CHAPTER 11: 21st Century Boys


We went to Spain where the single was still number one and we were treated like the Visionary Gods I knew we (well I anyway) were. The record company guys all loved it and everywhere we went EMI operatives were having the time of their lives too. They got more out of it and drunker than we did. Back in Madrid’s most expensive hotel in true “Stardust” movie fashion, Degville wouldn’t leave his suite to go to the TV Show and we had to do it without him. For some reason he and Mayhew had had some kind of fight and Martin was distraught. All grist to the mill I thought, nothing like a bit of internal violence to keep everyone on their toes. As usual there was something I was not seeing, or perhaps not wanting to see...

At the end of May we flew out to Ibiza for some rest, climaxing by playing the opening night of the legendary Ku Club. A prestigious event that the hippest band each year was asked to play and the deal was you got to stay for the week at Ibiza’s best hotel “Pikes”, owned by the flamboyant Tony Pike who was like a gangster from a James Bond Movie. Pikes is where Wham filmed the video of Club Tropicana. The England football squad were also staying there and they became quite enamoured by the statuesque UltraVixens. (My lips are super-injunctioned).

At the club we hung out with Roman Polanski, JSP threw a tray of drinks at Neal X’s latest model girlfriend, Magenta is wearing dark glasses, and they dyed the swimming pool blood red at the Ku club as a suitable setting for us to play. It was all business as usual for the band... or so I thought...

Television was my next game. Video walls. Live TV as part of the music. What was the new catch phrase? “Television is the Jimi Hendrix Solo of the future....”
